City of Sendai

Sendai is located approximately 300 kilometers north from Tokyo, and faces the Pacific Ocean. Despite Sendai being the biggest city in the Tohoku (northeast) region of Japan, it is known as a city richly endowed with nature. Actually, Sendai is called "Mori no Miyako" (Forest City). The climate of Sendai is mild and comfortable throughout the year. It is not too hot even in August; the average highest temperature is 28 degrees Celsius.

 

Sight Spots

Sendai has many historical spots related to the Date family. There is the statue of the lord "Date Masamune" in the ruins of Sendai Castle, where you can also enjoy a panoramic view of Sendai city. Zuihoden is the grave of Date Masamune, where you can find artifacts and memento of the Date family. The Osaki Hachiman Shrine, built in 1607 by Date Masamune, is designated as a national treasure. We recommend "Loople Sendai" bus for your sightseeing tour.
 

Matsushima

Matsushima sea coast is known as one of three most scenic spots in Japan. It is located approximately 30 kilometers from Sendai. From Matsushima or Shiogama, you can take an excursion ship which cruises among the islands covered with pine trees.
 

Hot Springs

Akiu and Sakunami hot springs are very famous in Japan. You can get these spa resorts by a 40-60 minutes drive. There are many traditional Japanese-style hotels, called Ryokan, which provides very big public baths and Japanese dishes. Some of Ryokan have public baths located outside.
 

Tanabata Festival

The Sendai Tanabata Festival is held from August 6th to 8th every year. In downtown Sendai, stores compete to see who can create the most beautiful Tanabata bamboo decorations with colorful Japanese paper (washi). Decorative balls and strips of paper with wishes written on them are attached to the decorations. More than 2 million visitors flock to Sendai to enjoy these beautiful decorations.
