911の直後に作られた曲。冒頭、静かなオープニングで幕が上がるや否や、突然「The start of Armageddon」というシャウトが沈黙を破ります。この唐突さは、平凡な日常を突然襲ったあの911のテロの衝撃まさにそのものです。
Hate is turned to others, for their religion or their skinアメリカ人なら誰もが心に抱いていたであろう、ぶつけどころのない怒りと虚無感そして恐怖と不安、あの日の混沌がこの一節に刻み込まれています。テロの犠牲者を追悼するために、Good Charlotte, Goldfinger, Mest が合同で作ったこの曲は、彼らの力強くもどこか悲しい歌声を通して、あの日の記憶を昨日の出来事のように蘇らせます。

と始まるこの歌は、まさに井上陽水の「少年時代」の雰囲気を思い起こさせます。過ぎ去った夏の恋人を回想するこの歌には同時に、もう戻ることのない青春時代への思いも込められています。

Will the ending be ever coming suddenly?同時多発テロの発生でアメリカ中が人生の先行きに大きな不安を抱えていた頃、Hoobastank はそんな不安を代弁するかのごとくこんな質問をストレートにぶつけてきました。こんな疑問を抱きながらアメリカという国そのものが全く先の見えない暗闇の中でもがいている様子を、この曲は描写しているとも思えます。

Homeボノが感情を込めて「Ho〜me」と歌い上げるこの箇所は、望郷の思いを募らせ、泣かせてくれます。

Walk onエンディングはこれだけ動詞が並びます。 この中で All this you can leave behind という部分は、否定形になってアルバムのタイトルに使われていますし、よく聞くとボノも曲の冒頭で All that you can't leave behind とつぶやいていて、過去を切り離すことができないという葛藤がそのあたりに垣間見える気がします。
