Welcome to the 4th International Symposium on Ultrafast Photonic Technologies (ISUPT2009), which is held at Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC), Tohoku University on Aug. 4-5, 2009.

ISUPT is intended to provide a forum for researchers working on ultrafast photonic technologies including ultrahigh-speed optical communication, optical metrology, lasers, bio-medical technology, and advanced measurement technologies. The first ISUPT (originally named as "Europe-US-Japan Symposium on Ultrafast Photonics Technology") was held at Makuhari in Japan in 2003, followed by the 2nd symposium at University of St. Andrews in 2005 hosted by Profs. Wilson Sibbett and Alan Miller, and the 3rd symposium at MIT in 2007 hosted by Prof. Erich P. Ippen.

The 4th symposium, ISUPT 2009, consists of 22 invited presentations by eminent speakers from U.S., Europe, and Japan. The latest advances in ultrafast photonics are presented, and future directions for research and development will be discussed among the leaders in this field.

ISUPT takes place in the best season of Sendai. From August 6 (Thu) - 8 (Sat), we have a very large festival (Tanabata Summer Festival) in Sendai. This would offer the opportunity to enjoy not only the symposium, but also traditional Japanese culture with excellent food. A banquet will be planned at Matsushima sea coast, which is recognized as one of the three most scenic spots in Japan.

This symposium is sponsored by RIEC, NICT, and AIST, and co-sponsored by JSPS Core-to-Core Program. Registration fee is free to all participants.
